Most newer vehicles have something like OnStar or the like and many even come with free roadside service for the first few years of their life. 
When my diesel pickup quit, I was lucky enough to have cell service and a call to 911 got me connected to the body shop and their roll-back. It's been long enough back that I don't remember the details but I think the price was in the range you quoted. Fortunately, I had the money to cover the hauling and parts to get the pickup running again.
A vehicle with no serpentine belts or vee-belts would eliminate that point of failure
