Checked you link and recognized the name of Barringer Crater.
Believe they tried mining for metals there but not sure if they were successful.

There are lots of craters around that are so old they are hidden by the erosion of the ground but that one is in a good place to reduce natural impact and is not so old.

Did they have displays there to show what a meteor strike does to the surrounding rocks?
Have not seen the effect but understand the shock creates distinctive shattering or cracks in rocks.
