My experience is same as you. Hard to catch them before they are destroyed and have to cut it off if it wasn’t already bad.

You do tap the collar opposite the direction of shaft rotation to lock it on the bearing race before tightening the set screw?

It will tighten either way but if you tighten it in the direction of shaft rotation, and the bearing ever locks up, the shaft will tend to spin the inner race in the collar and that will unlock the interference fit of the collar. Then the shaft spins in the inner race and cuts a groove in it.

I doubt it really matters which direction 99.9% of the time.
