Faunsdale, AL | Construction equipment market sort of expects it?
It does complicate finding simple parts. That was the intent behind the John Deere split system. All the lights and small stuff was 12 volts but you got the 24 for better starting. The truck manufacturers used the series/parallel switch to do the same thing.
I can’t remember how John Deere wired the 5020 but I think it was a straight 24 volt system vs the split system used on the 3020 and 4020. Again, if it ever had the center ground, ours didn’t have it by the time I was old enough to know. 24 volt 5020 had a Motorola alternator instead of the generator used on the others. It could have been built with the rectifier isolated from the frame so it could be used for a center grounded system. 99.9% of the alternators you run in to have the rectifier grounded to the frame, so no way to split the system by grounding the center of the battery string.
