Eastern NE KS | On the preventative end of this discussion...
I use an autogenous solid-dose vaccine made with isolates collected by area vets. It includes multiple isolates of both M. bovis and M. bovoculi. It is not inexpensive ($5.50)/dose. However, it is the first single dose product that works here, for us. Selling calves with clear eyes, knowing they were allowed to grow thru the summer without a blind or damaged eye is worth the attempts at prevention to me. While I doubt the sale barn discounts cover the cost, I can only bet the health and unencumbered growth does.
The solid dose pellets are given subQ in the neck. Pellets vaccinate in 2-3 days then again in about 3 weeks. My calves are vaccinated in May, before turn out to grass.
The first 2 years pinkeye prevention was not perfect but improved with the addition of new isolates. The last 2 years has been perfect. 328 good/clear eyes. After all the years of this problem, I hope the clear eyes continue.
