My all time favorite is Marlin 336 in 30-30 with peep sight. And like Boone says a little high and they stay there. PS My Dad bought it for me when 13 at the IH dealer parts counter, now 78. Rifle looks the same.
When Iowa went from slug only, to straight wall rule, (now allow bottlenecks from .35-50 caliber) I opted to go lever action. And fell in love for most of the situations I find myself in. Which is inside 150 yards. Beyond that, gravity starts taking hold more than I care for. Couple of my favs are a Henry in .41 magnum. And a Winchester ‘94 BigBore in .375 win. Also have a commemorative RMF edition ‘94 in 38/55. Anybody that knows anything about revolver cartridges, has high praise for .41 magnum. It’s a real stomper. And in a rifle, all the better. I’m gonna be loading up some Sierra 170 grain hollow points to harvest does with. While lighter in S.D. Than I like, I have no doubt that hot loaded, in a rifle, those bullets are going to turn a does lungs into pudding. Does go to the locker for table fare, so I double lung them to not ruin any meat. The ‘94 Win is a pleasure to carry, at only 6 pounds, and balanced superbly, when carrying just forward of the lever. I love the fast follow up shot ability, if needed. Can’t remember when I needed it last, but it’s there if I do. I can’t cycle a bolt as fast as I would like, and stay on target doing so.
