W Texas
No way you market 500 calves per year.

Run 500 cows and on average 100 or more will be replacements.

At 50+ cows per year death/disappearance loss. Can’t afford to cull non-breeders. .

70% weaning rate on survivors.

Keep 50 heifers per year for replacements and on the forage on offer usually takes three years to get first calf…..

So you market around 200 calves per year.

Calves are light and don’t bring top dollar because the only cattle that will survive are probably corriente crosses and calves get hauled long distance to a feedyard.

Maybe 100 miles of fence to maintain and tumbleweeds blow up on them and blow them over. Always carry 10 gallons of drinking water in case your truck breaks down. Ostensibly normal folk get out in the desert and go wild. Shoot windmills, signs, equipment…..
