Crazy isn't it. There's a point where the acres per cow number becomes so inefficient even the desert rat cows can't turn a profit. When all things are considered, many of those ranches are in the 50% of cow herds that are not profitable. Fighting all that mess while just waiting for the day the government decides to change your grazing abilities with the stroke of a pen sure sounds like fun to me.
