NW IL | Yeah I get that. The west is a hard place to make a living. Farther markets, more growing season risk. Still opportunities but they are harder. I know of someone raising shrimp in old hog barns in Nebraska for example. I personally know several making a living with vegetable farming in SD and Nebraska.
I for sure don't think the government should mandate farm size or methods. I dove into direct to consumer research when my brothers and I came back to the farm and tried to make it work with 4 families full time on the farm with only 60 head dairy, feeding out bull calves, and 400 row crop acres. Since then we've a lot bigger and still playing the commodity game. Some days I think it would be nice if we could take the risk and pivot back to something smaller and closer rather than running across 4 counties to find ground and still barely paying bills and missing time with family. | |
