jeff gordon - 11/5/2024 06:51 Company called Glentel had them available 20yrs ago. At the time they were the cheapest communications across NA. Winter oilfield (north) and marine applications all used it. Knew a bunch of long distance truckers that had them. Zero roaming charges. Doesn't Musk build a mini portable Starlink system. I'd consider going that route instead and use it around the farm as well
Friends in the oilpatch told me a normal person can't use a satellite phone. The delay is too long, and it messes you up unless you know how to handle it.

Satellite Phones | Iridium Satellite Communications

T
hese are currently available and anyone can buy a phone and service.  It is NOT cheap.

iPhone 16 with iOS 18 can send and receive SMS messages via satellite when the cellular and WiFi radios are on, but no service is available.  The iPhone costs as much as the irridium phone and can't do voice over satellite, so sort of depends where you are roaming and how badly you need service.
