Why are bitcoins values based on US dollars?
If you don’t believe in the US dollar why would you base your precious block chain on a dollar?
If I would have invented bitcoin I would base the value of it based on USDA prime ribeyes, but I digress…
As your last phrase indicates, anything can be a currency. Dollars, yen, cigarettes, bitcoin, bottles of tide, seashells, whatever- all can be currencies. People tend to state the value of currencies relative to other currencies they’re familiar with.
