EC SD | Bitcoin's value is purely based on hype. There are many thousands of other crypto currencies which lack the hype of bitcoin, and are worthless. A few others have enough hype to have some value. If/when the hype fades, the value of bitcoin will go to zero, just like any other no-longer-relevant currency from ages gone by.
At some point the cryptography will be broken, just like many, many other cryptography solutions of the past. Quantum computing is one potential way to break it, but other means could be found. No computer algorithm is flawless. The prize for breaking it is huge, so there are lots of investments made towards breaking it. Will it take years? Maybe or maybe not... When it is broken, it will not be from some hypothetical "brute force" approach, calculated as taking thousands of years to break. That is not how prior crypto algorithms were broken.
Bitcoin could remain fashionable for decades to come, and be worth millions of dollars each potentially, or it could collapse into obscurity and become worthless. If it does fail, some other shiny object will appear to replace it. The makers of it, and promoters of it are definitely making a ton of money. Personally, I am fine with thousands of other investment choices, and will take a pass on crypto fever.
