Have a project this winter, going to involve a bunch of holes. Need to punch about 70 holes that need to be fairly precise. These will be in lenghts of 4"x12"x1/2" mild steel. What's the best way to go about this? I thought about plasma cutting them out but that may be a little on the crude side for what I want. Got a quote from a metal shop for what I wanted it was going to be $50/plate. Each plate also includes 5 1/2" holes. What is the proper tool for this job?
First things first, if a place quoted you 50 bucks for a 4" x 12" plate 1/2" thick with some holes laser cut you need to look for a different place to do it, while i don't know the exact price of my local place judging by what i was charged for a similar sized peice guessing less than 20 bucks as you could cut all those from a single sheet of 4' x 6' of plate, cause even at 20 bucks that would be 1500 for 3/4 of a sheet of steel, that size peice of steel would weigh about 500 lbs, 500lbs of plate will run about 250$$ at the most, plus cutting fees, email me if you want recommendations for a place in Sunnyside, WA that could give you a quote.
