south central IOWA | If that's good germination then it wasn't seeded at the proper rate. Just depends on the weather if they survive. I've had winters that have killed newer seedlings and then winters that didn't. A good snow here soon would help them.
From that one tiny picture, my opinion is it didn't all germinate properly because of laying there so long waiting on moisture. But once it did rain, it probably started the process enough in all the seed that the ones that didn't sprout are done for.
Be ready to overseed as soon as you can next spring. Problem then will be if you just throw seed on top of the ground, fescue is the worse for that cause it's such a big seed and doesn't get good soil contact. The soil will be mellow come spring and have no cracks for the seed to fall into. But if you rough it up with a drag or try to roll your seed in, you might be damaging the seedlings that came up this fall.
Depending on what you're trying to match, I'd probably tend to want to overseed with bluegrass. It also all depends on how picky you are with your grass. Some people don't care, some want it perfect.
This was seeded in July when you're not suppose to be seeding and having any luck. Grass does funny things though and wants to survive.
