As to the other things like the engines being considered worn out at 100K, I would venture to guess it had as much to do with the oil back than as anything. I know guys who have 250K on an old square body that is still going strong. The 'best' one I know of was bought maybe 15 years ago with something like 20-30K on it, ran good oil, and it just goes and goes. Almost no highway miles, mostly gravel roads and pasture trails.
Yes, the new ones are much improved, but on the other hand I'm currently driving my birdbath Power Wagon for daily driving because I've been waiting on a computer for my newer pickup for over 2 months now. Yes, the carb is finicky, and yes, you have to let it warm up a bit before you drive it or it will stall, but it is the one that runs right now. On top of that, I can actually mount a 2-way radio on the dash about anywhere I want on it, as well.
