E ND | Couple of things to keep in mind in addition to the serviceability issues.
The dig depth, reach and lift capacity is lower on a short tail swing machine than a standard excavator with the same operating weight. They usually have longer, heavier undercarriages and tall/heavy counterweights to make up for the lack of counterweight. A 25 ton short tail excavator will have the boom and stick of a 20 ton for example.
They also operate differently and the boom foot is located farther back relative to the cab/front of tracks. This helps the operating range up close in tight to the machine (think operating in a single lane of traffic) but isn't as handy for reach in the wide open areas.
Most brands (other than CAT) seem to have a smaller cab on the short tail machines than their regular tail swing so make sure you sit in one. | |
