I don't believe I have ever seen a 5 year old truck rusting out around here. Ten years old yeah there are plenty of those rusting out but I can also show you a lot of 10 to 15 year old trucks that don't have much rust. Most of it boils down to how they are taken care of. If you run it through a car wash that has a good undercarriage flush at least once a week in the winter rust really shouldn't be much of a problem. If you blast it off in the shop once or twice a winter you will probably have rust. Getting that undercarriage blasted off regularly in salt season is key to keeping rust at bay. I remember when the square bodies came out in 73. The 73's and 74's pretty much started rusting when you drove them off the lot. They were terrible. They changed something in the mid 70's and they got a little better but not great. Keep in mind the roads were not nearly as heavily salted back then either. If the same amount of salt had been used on the roads in the 70's those trucks would have been cancered out in two years. I owned about eight of them so I know.
