| I have to agree with jd4930.
The ability to use my own seed on canola, and well soybeans would cause some big headaches.
I'm appreciating all the advice people are giving. And I understand most if not all of it.
While I do think a magic bullet would be great I know that isn't true. Maybe a magic toaster.
I just can't gather how bigger farms can profit. Running numbers on beans today. At 8.97 current cash price...it would take 34 bushels an acre to make a very little profit for my farm. I mean hopefully the market rebounds before choices must be made. But...with a county t yeild of 31... things would have to be IDEAL to even remotely think of turning a profit.
While margins are tight. I can't be the only one.
I don't necessarily think that looking Into alternative crops is a bad thing. I can do my due diligence. And weigh the options.
Do I really have to quit farming and go find a job because I'm trying to find a way to turn a decent profit farming?
Are the alternative crops the magic bullet. No probably not. Do they look better on paper? Based on responses here. Yes. But looking better on paper is better than the current crops which don't look good on paper.
I can't say I was looking for someone to tell me, it'll suck but everything will be OK.
I want to ease everyone's mind here and say that I wasn't going to put everything 100% into a "specialty" crop. I'm saving some room for a little wheat and beans.
