Like JohnW, I turned to Wikipedia for a generally-accepted definition/overview. As I read thru it, I found myself saying, 'Isn't that what religion is supposed to be?'

Yes it is, but "religion" too often gets crowded out by "church" which merely takes stoicism and adds, "Oh, and we'd like you also to 'prayerfully consider' how much of your money you can give us so we can build a fancy new building, finance a bloated bureaucracy, and pay to send a bunch of people to harass some simple natives who are already living a stoic life but just don't know it."
