Better take off those rose colored glasses. When did your ancestors come over? Mine were on either side of 1900. Czech heritage. My grandmother was born here in 1911. She made sure her boys spoke only English - my dad - mainly because the first group over here never learned English unlike your thoughts. All sides of our family were like that in Chicago. Pretty sure all big settlement areas were that way 120 years ago. I remember my one great grandmother didn't speak a lick of English ans she was here for 80 years before passing at 100+. Look at all the "new" groups here. It hasn't changed. 2nd generation adapts but not the first.
