Southeast Colorado
Here in literal Dust Bowl country I'd sure hate to see it go. Rental prices became more in line with normal cash lease rates about 5 years ago. Lots of the CRP is getting around $30/acre. In 1986 on the initial sign up it all went in for $40/acre. That was akin to hitting the lottery obviously! But many farmers were hanging on by their teeth so most weren't getting rich.

Our county's farmable acres are about 30% in CRP. We have been given a waiver over what most areas are used to because of that Dust Bowl area designation.

But yes, the rural communities were sort of decimated after that original sign up. Perhaps it would have happened anyway with bigger equipment and no till/gps farming.
