Big Sky Country | Listened to Ray Antsotigue (sp) talk about nutrition, maintenance being pretty directly linked to cow size.
‘And I’m not even gonna ask you what your cows weigh—-every cow in the state of Montana weighs 1250#—-then you ship some opens and old girl weighs 1450—“my, she’s a big un!”
Folks keep the biggest shiniest hef calves, outa their “performance bulls”—than ponder “how’d my cows get so damn big?”
Seems like when a pendulum swings, it often goes too far the other way.
Interesting thing I saw on frame was watching DeBoos work cows—-upside down T on the chute—scored everything. Looked @ their feet, noted disposition, body scored them—-and that was also interesting—-a cow that came in in good condition got a bonus, before adjusting weaning
Ps——I’ve bought late Calvers from a big out fit that bred most of their heifers—one of their criteria for ones they kept for themselves was heifer had to be over a certain weight by certain day. Think their cows were big—LOL! Branded @ their place—-scale under chute—-one ol gal 2050#—-straight angus
