North Dakota | 2009 colon cancer diagnosis. Stage 3B. Found cancer cells in lymph node.
42 years of age. Colon resection removing 1/3 of sigmoid colon. After resection surgery had trouble getting colon to work properly. Became ill with terrible bouts of intestinal gas and pain. Ended up having sepsis where colon came apart and leaked.
Wore a drain bag for six weeks to drain infection. Finally able to have bag removed and started chemo treatments.
This is somewhat of a worse case scenario but gives an idea of the extremes that can happen with evasive surgery. The biggest hurdle IMHO is getting colon to restart after resection. All the nerves that move waste products through your colon are severed and need to repair and reestablish communication with each other. I was told afterword drinking coffee is a good way to “wake up” the colon and help it start to do its job. I suppose caffeine is the primary instigator.
Important to eat yogurt and/or pre and probiotics to reestablish gut bacteria. Eat foods that are easy on digestive system in the beginning. Not too much fiber but not too little. Laxatives and stool softeners also help ease things along through the healing process. Getting up and walking moving also helps. I started by making one round around the hospital ward. Then moved to two times etc. Made it a progressive game to slowly build up my balance and stamina.
Pray all goes well for you. The surgery is a success with no complications and you can start the healing process ASAP. God Speed!!!
