Central WA
The main thing nearly all of the government programs have done is provide a price floor that guarantees other areas of the world can modernize their agriculture at our expense. The price support programs have allowed the Brazil, Ukraine, S Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, etc to increase production while we sit on our subsidies and become the supplier of last resort for any buyers out there. We build surpluses on the taxpayers dollar. That is fine until the taxpayer begins to wonder why American farmers should be so special. It really is indefensible. It has also turned us into monocultualists without the resilience that historically was true when farmers had multiple enterprises including livestock. As an old-timer once told me, "out in the dryland we need a cowherd to have something to sell in the dry years when the wheat crop failed."
