NWMO | Battle of Monongahela - July 9, 1755
Near present day Braddock, Pennsylvania
Washington was serving as a courier for General Braddock during Braddock’s campaign during the French and Indian war.
Braddock was shot through the lung and killed during the battle, some say by one of his own men. The young courier underneath him, George Washington of Virginia at the age of 23, was able to command the men and muster a retreat.
During the retreat, Washington had 2 horses shot out from underneath him. After his successful retreat, he found several more bullet holes in his jacket and gate and metal fragments in his hair. He himself, however, was unscathed. He, that same year at the ripe age of 23 was given the rank of colonel and put in command of the Virginia regiment.
As the legend goes, an elderly Native American man requested to meet Washington before his death. The man recounted the battle of monongahela and claims that he and his men shot at Washington no less than 17 times, including the shots that killed his horses. According to the elderly native, they quit shooting because they didn’t want to waste bullets on someone who seemed to be protected by the great spirit.
We all know of course what history and fate had in store for Washington years later. As a Christian, I believe that in very specific and important moments that God intervenes in the events of the world. No other man was capable of doing what Washington did in the revolutionary war. He was unique, he was the man for the job. History was forever changed because of him, and by all means he should not have survived the battle of Monongahela.
Anyways, I had never heard this story before today. Just thought I’d share with everyone here this neat and interesting event. I pray that God guides and blesses our current President. I pray that God blesses the men and women who serve, in all capacities. And I pray that God blesses all of America. | |
