Here is what your insurance company would want you to do.
Fuse the control circuit in the compressor control box and use wire rated the same as the power wiring to the compressor. You can use 14 or 16 g wire it just needs an in-line fuse to protect it.
Insurance companies hire well seasoned fire inspectors to sift through the ruble and determine the cause of a fire.
I’ve been on scene with them a few times and they know what they are doing.
