| Which is a shame. Career firefighters are the rarity. 70% of all firefighters in the US are volunteers. Many departments are combination. Here, most firefighters started as volunteers.
Volunteer programs are excellent systems for combination departments to get a good look at future hires.
The same kinda snobby crap goes on in the military with active duty versus reserve. In the Marine Corps 75% of Medal of Honor winners were from reserve units. Korea would have been lost without reservists.
Same is true of the large scale fires in CA. Without volunteers and vendors it would be far worse. | |
