Lack of cooling, could be from grease and other residue from the stove top getting into the internals... Regular house dust isn't good for them either.

That area over a stove gets a LOT of junk splattered up that you can't see, had a range hood at an older house where the filter from the range hood was caked full of grease and didn't work very well until I cleaned it out. Using them pretty heavy can overheat them as well, I know that baking potatoes/cooking squash is better done in the oven. Made one microwave smoke while trying to cook some winter squash once.
