Is there any argument that it makes it better or worse, especially on a low carb diet? And if so what should a person do to replace the function of whole grains?

The only possible kidney stress I have heard of from a low carb diet is from gluconeogenesis. And I take that with a grain of salt.

Easy way to avoid that is make sure you eat enough fat.

The Lewis and Clark expedition ate up to 9 pounds of meat per day per man while wintering near Mandan, ND. I don't know this, but I highly suspect it was lean meat which caused them to be in near continuous gluconeogenesis. All in all, they were a pretty healthy bunch.

YMMV.
