E.Central MN | If enterprise insurance is available, it's a no-brainer to buy a reasonable level of revenue coverage to get good protection against weather caused yield losses and/or market price drops. I don't carry the other coverages because even though those risks have materialized at places in our county, our fields haven't had a major problem in the years we've farmed them. Each farmer has to decide what his risks are and how much insurance expense is reasonable. I try to stick with a reasonable premium that protects from a major crop or revenue loss and accept some of the risk rather than paying a very high premium for an insurance company to take more of the risk. There has been enough weather risk that I don't think a corn/bean farmer can afford not to carry it. | |
