| Nitrogen management is the hardest part of high oat yields, IMO.
It takes 1# of N per bushel so shooting for 150 bu takes a lot of N planning. Oats can handle that much N, they cannot handle that much N all at once. A good chunk will come from the soil release in season, I figure 10-15# per % organic matter. A nitrate test will show what is there to begin with. Never more than 60# N cumulative of the soil test N and the early applied (pre planting through tillering). Of the balance of 90#, say at 3% OM that’s about 40# released in season, so need to apply 50# more after the first joint. Enough N for 150 bu if there’s not much lost and a fairly low risk of lodging. | |
