Wallis, TX | I had one of the very first 7140’s off the line, traded it a year later for a 4955. So never had them both in the field at the same time but did put lots of hours on both myself.
The early boxcars had lots of little issues, most were updated as production runs, some later on the 72 series. Front cover on the engine was flat, vibrated and leaked oil like a sieve. A/C spit water on you, fix was to put window screen over the evaporator, helped but not perfect. SCV flow controls were behind the rear tire. Deere was outside the cab but not hidden. Trans was smooth except 6-7 & 12-13, those were ROUGH, 6-7 was not useable under a load. Updated with bigger accumulators and possibly valving later on. Shifter was HARD to move, and slow reverse speed, both updated. Wiring/draft pins issues, updated with different components. I even broke a draft arm on the 3point, looked like issue from welding/production made it brittle. Now the dealer did a good of keeping it in the field but it was a struggle for him.
The good, those early 7140’s were around 250 hp from the factory. It wound up at a buddies farm and he had relatively good service out of it after all the updates. Ted tractor had better factory lights, lots of Deere from that era had extra front lights added on the weight bracket.
The 4955 was driven to the farm and maybe went to the shop once. The only thing coming to mind was it needed the low idle adjusted as it was way too low from the factory. Traded it on a 4960 after one year because it was a ‘deal’ for me. Neither were nearly as powerful as the 7140. We were farming 8r wide at the time and both had plenty of 3 point lift capability and set wide both turned around just fine. | |
