NC Kansas | we try to separate if we can, but out in the larger calving pasture when the weather is nice we don't have that option. So what we do, and this requires a strong back and some agility... is keep an old 1/2 ton pick up (old and 1/2 ton so it's as low as possible to the ground). Use a 60" shepherds crook to snag the calf by the back foot and drag it up into the bed of the pick up. You are elevated off the ground and mostly out of harm's way. We band at birth too so I don't want to be in a hurry when doing that. We have dog gentle cows that eat of your hand, but they get protective and I don't trust any of them with my health/well-being. Love the shepherd's crook too, it's the right length to maintain distance from a salty momma cow, and 99% of the time they won't come past the calf after you, but if they do you have a 5' head start! | |
