Scranton | A couple of thoughts:
We planted Reins last year (as you know) as a nurse crop with a semi-permanent alfalfa stand. The oats did ok, though disappointing vs your yields. We were short on rain for the fifth year in a row, so I think they suffered from the heat and dry weather. But it was the best alfalfa stand I've every had...best stubble hay alfalfa I've ever had. I think the Reins really let the alfalfa get established.
Second, you might look into disaster crop insurance. The last time I bought it it was a fixed amount per crop per county(like $65 or something) but if there happens to be a govt payment, you will be eligible. That may have changed, but worth a look into.
Third, I'm amazed you can put 2,000 of hog manure down and not have down oats. Of course your harvest/drying program probably helps, and not being in the west central Iowa wind belt helps for certain.
That's a lot of acres of oats. Will you rotate to fewer acres for 2026 to balance out? | |
