Subject: RE: Initials used instead of names

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

It used to be fairly common in the South for males to be called by the initials of their first and middle names (e.g. J. C. Last name, T. C. Last name, etc.). It was popular for a while to give kids a name that the initials could be used for a name (Tee Jay, Bee Jay, etc.). For example, I have a niece named after her father. Her name is Brittany Jo (my brother was called Joe, short for Joseph). Many people call her "B.J" or "Beege". A few people refer to some of my male relatives as well as myself as "Mac" due to the fact that my last name begins with "Mc" (which, I am told, means "son of" in Ireland). Amongst many of our darker pigmented neighbors a person will be know by a nickname or by a portion of their longer name. We had a young fellow on the basketball team whose name was Quintius. He was simply known as "Q" (no relation to the guy in the James Bond movies). Lashundrea is often called "Shun."
