What style pump, i think those engines had 3-4 different injection pump options through the years. Possibilities the gear could've slipped time, if hard starting is your only complaint, there's things I would check before blaming the pump, filters, injectors, compression, fuel system leak back, lift pump ect ect, all things would vary some based on the type of injection pump
