I really let the nav in the car choose charging stops. It optimizes route and charging level pretty much automatically. I do tend to err on the conservative side of things, so would often linger a bit and take on an extra 10 Kwh while stopped to charge. The stop in Laurel was really unnecessary if I'd been driving on, the same day but I really like to have 55 to 60% when staying overnight. Sentry system uses 7 or 8% during the night and I like to have a 50 mile drive in the morning before charging. Gives the car time to warm the battery for fast charging.
