Everyone has their own final wishes, and no one is wrong. I've known many that have scattered ashes. I have been involved in human ash scattering from an airplane. Many keep their ashes at home. Some divide them up amongst the children, etc. Scattering of ashes can't be undone.
Ashes can also be buried at cemeteries. I personally don't know of any cemetery that has been abandoned, unless it was a small private family cemetery. But, getting someone to run a cemetery is becoming increasingly harder. In NE IL, many are asking for township boards to take over management of village cemeteries. Local cemetery allows 2 (not sure why only 2) containers of ashes on 1 grave site.
If your ashes are scattered, how does anyone come to visit or honor you? If you're a veteran, how do we put a flag on your grave on Memorial Day? You won't have one. Some want to have their ashes scattered or buried on THEIR farm. I'm willing to bet that in 100-150 yrs the name on the farm will no longer be the same. You'll be residing on someone else's farm anyway.
Again, lots of different personal decisions that are made.
