I had 3 inch hail in July, derecho in August and drought all summer and still had 130-160 bushel corn. I would guess there is 30 bushels still in the field that I could not get due to the wind damage. The hail and drought dinged it, but the wind is what killed the Iowa average IMO. And given that the trees around here took it almost worse than the corn, I would say the corn was pretty danged impressive all things considered. The primary reason for the big drop in production is acres that were zeroed out that in many cases, likely should not have been. Many of the fields in my area that were disced under likely could have seen a harvestable yield of 130 plus if the farmer had tried. And now with the prices, I have talked to several that wished they had tried to harvest. | |
