If u can find the answer u will never need to work another day.....I'll say its 90% weather/10% hybrid.....we had same seed on 2 different farms,planted 1 day apart and 1 is 0 VOM , other is 11 ppm......
I think it is more then 10% hybrid. As producers we are pushing maturity, seed companies are making hybrids with strong ear shanks (prevent ear loss) and loose husks (for better dry down).
A perfect trifecta to have an upright ear with loose husk, that collects and trap rain water in the ear, the full season.
Just my personal observation, nothing scientific. It just seems that newer hydrids won't let the ears flop over.
