So the power companies will pay or credit your electric car back at peak rates? Since they have no cost in infrastructure, employees, or the electricity itself, they’ll pay you that? In that case you should just charge your batteries with the cheap power you get in middle of night and put back on the grid when it’s higher, make a fortune!

LOL, your comment is pretty funny.

Yes, that is pretty much how it works. The most utilities are paying on a demand based rate structure, not just a kwh usage structure...

Our local utility, on irrigation has rates around 7 cents per kwh. But, during peak controlled hours it can be as high as 70 cents per kwh. It's all about demand, not usage.

So to answer your question, you need to understand that electricity cost vary greatly throughout the day, and vary day to day based on demand....

To help balance the grid, and do "peak shaving" it would likely be worth it to a utility to charge you say 5 cent a kwh to charge at night, and pay you, or credit you 10 cents a kwh to discharge your battery during peak hours.

They are doing this in Austraila and it's working wonderfully.
