That is correct. On an irrigation driveshaft for example if the shaft is too straight the u joint will not last. You need 2 or 3 inches of offset and plenty of grease and they will last a long time. I can't see why a little slop in those arms hurt much anyway. The pressure is all on one side. It's not like they are rattling around.
