Subject: Min wage, govt regulations, small towns

Southern MN
I personally don’t think many farms in our area are paying less than $15/hr for any quality help, am guessing in our area it is $17-20. But when we hire the high school kid with no experience, in reality they should almost work for free, as they are getting schooling just like when they go to classes, and many times are not worth anything until they get some experience. Unfortunately not all workers provide equal levels of productivity. What most people do not understand is these new regulations hurt our rural communities more than our metro counterparts. Most of our small businesses cannot afford an increase in their payroll, these small businesses don’t have any margin for costs increase. Walmart won’t close the doors, they will pick up any business from local stores closing. Consolidation in banking was forced by Dodd/Frank. Our small independent bank could not justify hiring extra people to comply with govt regulations, so sold out to neighboring bank. Bank used to hire 10-12, people, now they have kept the location open for now, but there is 1 person that reports to works there. Changes to the inheritance rules are not going to give young farmers more of a chance, as in our area the forced sale of these assets will just be gobbled up faster by the big corporate type pig, chicken interests that have pushed up the cost of land to begin with. Once they buy it it may never be on the market again. The problem with all of these feel good regulations are that they have consequences, and most people don’t recognize what caused the consequences when they see them. More regulations of these types are for big business and force consolidation, no matter what the proponents of these ideas tell you.
