Subject: RE: Annual rye grain in wheat

SW Nebraska Panhandle

If you are concerned about this years crop then the only methods are a sponge wiper or manual pulling.  My brother and his son has a business wicking rye every May/June.  He makes of his annual income during those 2 months.  Not 100% control by any means, but it reduces or eliminates dock at the elevator.  Damage to yield is already done.  Need to hire someone that knows what they are doing.  Wicking at just the right time and with a machine that won't kill the wheat.  Not as easy as it sounds.  For future years the best control is rotation.  Just don't plant wheat for 2-3 years.  New hybrids that allow spraying Agressor or Beyond works very well to eliminate rye and cheatgrass but kind of expensive and yield drag can happen.  We have a field with a rye problem this year.  We knew it when we planted the wheat so went with an Agressor resistant variety.  However, you have to spray 3 days after no nighttime temps below freezing and no forecast night time temps below freezing for 3 days.  This year when we had those the conditions the wind is blowing.  The chemical is still sitting in the barn waiting to be sprayed.  Might have to call my brother.
