Roots are using moisture 2-4 inches deep, not off the surface. I use 30 # drilled on 7.5 in or 45# broadcast or airplane. Some open slot not as big of deal as wind can't dry out seed nearly as fast. We are MUCH more likely to reduce yield from hot dry wind on beans than from shade
