Subject: RE: Cereal Rye in a Wet Spring

Once the rye reaches the reproductive phase of heading out and anthesis, the daily water usage goes up tremendously. At shin to knee high it is not using as much moisture yet. Our soybean planting date keeps getting earlier every year. I the past we were usually planting at flowering, and if you got a big rain you better be ready to plant in the next day or two because it would work perfect. The soil would look wet, but crumble apart in your fingers. With earlier planting, I can see why your having to wait longer. I suppose the solution is to find an earlier maturing cereal crop or just wait longer on a wet year
