We've been doing it for ~5 years. I do think it helps dry out deeper, but the problems we're having are sidewall smearing, slot not closing, and mud building up in gauge wheels (all problems in the 0-2" depth range). Keep getting 0.1-0.2" rains every couple days, and the top couple inches on the ground with rye aren't able to get rid of the surface moisture causing these issues.
